About

DOCOMOMO stands for DOcumentation and COnservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the MOdern MOvement. Initially founded in 1988 in The Netherlands, there are now DOCOMOMO working parties in over 40 countries. The organization is dedicated to the study of significant works of Modern Movement architecture, landscape design and urban planning around the world. DOCOMOMO US is the official Working Party of the United States.

If you are interested in Modern architecture and design, DOCOMOMO can connect you to people and events focused on this period of design. Dedicated to the documentation and preservation of Modern Movement buildings and sites of the recent past-broadly defined as 1920-1970–DOCOMOMO investigates the aesthetic, technical and social significance of this important body of work, from the iconic to the almost unknown. DOCOMOMO’s scope is also broad: from transparent skyscrapers to the quintessential Modern house; urban planning to Eames chairs. Founded as the US Working Party, DOCOMOMO US has been organizing chapters and gaining recognition in the U.S. since 1995.

DOCOMOMO FLORIDA…

DOCOMOMO US, FLORIDA CHAPTER is a regional society promoting research, scholarship, and education concerning the Modern Movement, and the conservation of the buildings, landscape, and built environment of the Modern Movement. The society provides a venue for the interchange of ideas among architectural historians, architects, preservationists, and others interested in the Modern built environment and its preservation. To further this purpose, local meetings, exhibitions, publications, and advocacy are encouraged. Consistent with this Purpose, cooperation is encouraged between DOCOMOMO US, FLORIDA CHAPTER and both DOCOMOMO-US and DOCOMOMO-International, as well as with other organizations in the region with mutually reinforcing goals.

DOCOMOMO FLORIDA hopes to increase public and professional awareness of Florida’s Modern Heritage through organized events and tours, development of useful Internet resources, electronic mailing lists, ongoing documentation, and outreach to other preservation organizations and professional groups.

Documentation of Florida’s existing Modern resources will assist preservation efforts. DOCOMOMO Georgia has begun compilation of a statewide inventory of these resources. This growing registry documents important districts, buildings, landscapes, interiors, and public art. The registry may assist with nomination of important resources to the national DOCOMOMO Registry.
